Postpone, Push Forward or Take Action?

We all know how tempting it is to delay things. In this blog, Jos explores the power of immediate action, why we procrastinate, and how it impacts our time, communication, and habits.

Postpone, Push Forward or Take Action?

These words probably sound familiar to you.
First, I want to thank everyone who read and shared my previous blog From Idea to Action. That’s what life is all about: sharing knowledge. “If you can't share, you can't multiply.”

Yet, many people see things differently. They prefer to keep everything to themselves—whether out of fear that someone might steal their idea, a desire to stay in control, resistance to change, or countless other reasons.

Why Procrastination Matters

To directly tie in with my previous blog, today's topic is “Procrastination.”
Of course, this doesn’t apply to you—you’re reading this blog! But think about those around you.

You might wonder: is procrastination really such a big deal?
The answer? Absolutely.

“Procrastination is the thief of your precious time.”

It shows up everywhere—from putting off big decisions to delaying simple gestures, like offering someone a compliment. Staying up too late. Waking up tired. Missing deadlines (or as I prefer to call them, FinishLines—for a good reason!).

The Trap of “I’ll Do It Later”

We all know the feeling: you want to reply to an email, book an appointment, or complete a task—but think, I’ll do it later. Then it slips away, and you forget.

Just today, a client of mine missed an appointment. Why?
They saw the email but didn’t add it to their calendar right away. That simple “I’ll do it in a minute” caused the appointment to vanish.

How Habits Shape Our Delay

Why do we keep doing this?
One reason is information overload. We struggle to filter everything that comes our way. Another is habit. We’re creatures of routine.

Our brains follow neural pathways built through repetition. Useful—until a few repeated delays train your brain to treat procrastination as normal.

It starts to affect us when our environment pushes back—or when our schedules overflow and we lose track of ourselves.

Procrastination in Communication

It’s not just tasks. Procrastination shows up in our relationships too.

We say, “They know I love them” or “Of course they know they’re appreciated.”
But do they?
When was the last time you told them?

Time for Compliments and Courage

In the past week, have you given five genuine compliments?
If not five, maybe three?

And to whom—people close to you, or someone less obvious?

What about feedback? In most companies, people speak about problems but rarely to the people who can solve them.
We wait. We hold back. That’s procrastination too.

Final Thought

Maybe none of this is new to you. But perhaps you’re a little more aware now.
If you’ve had a moment where you took action instead of putting it off—I’d love to hear your story.

Let’s keep learning from each other.
